The opening weekend for the ECAC Tournament was wildly entertaining. Quinnipiac struggled to beat RPI, going to overtime in both games. The 6th seeded Saints upset Princeton in overtime themselves, in large part due to an injury to Tiger defender Kelsey Koelzer. And Colgate put down Harvard’s quest for a repeat with a stunning overtime goal in game three.
Quinnipiac vs. St. Lawrence
Quinnipiac meets their second straight opponent that failed to score on them in the regular season. The Bobcats suppress scoring opportunities with the best of them and it can be difficult to break through.
Keys to the Series:
Just keep doing what they do.
Break through Quinnipiac’s defense. They’ve got plenty of talent to do so, they just need to find a way.
Brooke Webster. The St. Lawrence forward was on fire in their first round series with 2g, 3a, and a whopping 25 shots.
Clarkson vs. Colgate
The Knights and Raiders played one another tough despite Clarkson’s significant shots advantage. Shae Labbe had the only two overtime winners for Colgate this season, notching her second last week versus Harvard.
Keys to the Series:
Stay out of the box and don’t get run over on special teams.
Try to be in the game on shots and don’t spend too much time in their own end.
Erin Ambrose. The Golden Knight defender led all Clarkson scorers with four points, all assists, in their first round series.
Why Quinnipiac will win:
They proved themselves the best team on the ice over the course of the regular season.
Why Quinnipiac won’t win:
Clarkson can outshoot them and the Knights have the goaltending to match.
Why Clarkson will win:
They’re probably the most talented team in the conference, even though the regular season didn’t go that way.
Why Clarkson won’t win:
Their special teams were abysmal and their goaltending just wasn’t good enough against these teams in the regular season.
Why Colgate will win:
The Raiders are young and find ways to win despite underwhelming shot numbers.
Why Colgate won’t win:
Clarkson and Quinnipiac are better in too many phases.
Why St. Lawrence will win:
They’ve got the high end talent in Brooke Webster, Justine Reyes, Amanda Boulier, and Kennedy Marchment to play with these teams.
Why St. Lawrence won’t win:
They couldn’t get it done in the regular season, why would the playoffs be any different?
