The Robert Morris Colonials are currently 9-1-4 overall and 5-0-1 in the CHA, good enough for first place. They’re a bit of an odd case. The two best teams they’ve played are Providence and Syracuse. They’re 3-0-1 in those games. The two worst teams they’ve played are RIT and Merrimack. They’re 2-1-1 in those games.
They’re not a great possession team but they’re not terrible either averaging 28.5 shots for and 29.1 shots against per game. That’s good enough for 18th in the NCAA. They do everything pretty well outside of possessing the puck. Their 10.3% shooting percentage is good for 6th, and their .931 save percentage is good for 8th.
Their power play is converting at a 18.2% rate, also good for 9th in the country and their penalty kill is a respectable 15th at 87.5%. They’re getting contributions top to bottom in their lineup having only one skater without a point and only five without goals. Starting netminder Jessica Dodds has yet to lose a game and freshman wunderkind Jaycee Gebhard is 2nd on the team in scoring.
What makes them even more interesting is their one and only litmus test comes in ten days. On November 25th they square off against #7 Clarkson in the Windjammer Classic tournament. It will likely be their only game against a ranked opponent this season. Their only other non-conference opponent is Brown in late December.
It’s easily possible that Robert Morris ends the season with single-digit losses. If that sounds far-fetched, remember that means they only need to go 10-8-0 or better and they have games against St. Cloud State or Vermont, Brown (2x), RIT (2x), and Lindenwood (4x). I’d be pretty surprised if they didn’t win at least 8 of those games.
They’re actually 9th in the PairWise right now though their lead over North Dakota and Quinnipiac is slim. If they continue to take care of business this is a team that could sneak into the NCAA tournament on merit as opposed to getting the CHA tournament winner’s auto-bid.
